The Summary of “The Crucible” Play by Arthur Miller

The Crucible by Arthur Miller: A Staged Reading

The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller about the Salem witch trials of 1692. In which, in the story Reverend Parris finds some girls dancing naked in the forest, who claim they were bewitched. In the beginning of the story, it starts with the situation where in the home of Reverend Parris, whose daughter Betty lies unconscious and appears very ill.

In the story, there is conflict between Mary Warren and Abigail and Mercy. Mercy suspects that Mary is going to tattle on them for the things they did in the woods. Mary tries to encourage Abigail and Mercy to confess to dancing, as they'll "only be whipped" for it.

Further, the primary Man vs. Self conflict is illustrated through John Proctor's internal struggle to save his reputation or challenge the corrupt court and put an end to the witch trials. John Proctor desires or wants to protect his reputation but ultimately admits to adultery in hopes of undermining Abigail's authority.
Meanwhile, the Crucible story itself ends with John Proctor marching off to a martyr's death. By refusing to lie and confess to witchcraft, he sacrifices his life in the name of truth. At the end of the play, Proctor has in some way regained his goodness.

In addition, if we are talking about the theme, so, in The Crucible, the idea of goodness is a major theme. Almost every character is concerned with the concept of goodness, because their religion teaches them that the most important thing in life is how they will be judged by God after they die.

And here is some quotations that has been analyzed.

"I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. I never thought you but a good man John."
–Elizabeth –Act 2

From that quotation, we can see the Elizabeth character as Superego regarding to the Freudian Psychoanalysis, because she knows the difference between right and wrong and she is very un-judgemental.

"I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near! Or did I dream that? It's she put me out, you cannot pretend it were you. I saw your face when she put me out, and you loved me then and you do now!".
–Abigail –Act 1

Meanwhile, this quotation shows Abigail as ID, in which that Abigail desires John Proctor and does not think about how her lust would affect anyone except for herself.
